In regards to the centenary of the birth of Júlio Resende, which was celebrated in 2017, there are still some initiatives happening this year that you should know about. From April 7 to 30, Lugar do Desenho – Fundação Júlio Resende presents the initiative “Caminhos de Resende”, a showcase action in the area where the master was born and revealed as a painter. This will be an opportunity to revisit his work in an urban context, which can be seen from the Carlos Alberto Square to the Cedofeita Street, in 25 stores.
In Póvoa de Varzim, where the painter taught during the 1950s, the exhibition “Resende in Póvoa de Varzim – Drawings from the 1950s” will run until August 31, at the Museu Municipal de Etnografia e História.
Until May 20, at the temporary exhibitions room of the Foundation, you can find the exhibition “Uns Dyas entre Nós – Desenhos Humorísticos de Júlio Resende [Humorous Drawings by Júlio de Resende]”, which intends to celebrate this interesting side of the artist, through his circumstantial drawings, of comedic nature, dating from 1979 to 2000. “Done mostly in pen, these small drawings evoke the direct record of moments lived by the artist, relaxing, as a traveller on vacations that watches closely and increases his predisposition to look at what’s happening around him with a sense of contagious humour. Sometimes subtle and complacent, other times critical, always astute, Resende offers a perceptive portrait of the human species in situations that are sometimes awkward, and other times ridiculous and comedic, all of which we find ourselves experiencing at some point in our lives”, as can be read at the page of the Foundation.
